Weekend Frio River Tubing Update 5/17/12

We should have great Frio River tubing conditions this weekend! According to the USGS Frio River flow gauge, the flow has tapered off after the big rise to a very nice floating level of 70 cfs. The picture to the right was taken early this week and you can see how great the Frio River looks right now! Expect a brisk float with several fun rapids and very few walking sections between Seven Bluff  crossing and Kenneth Arthur crossing. I did the kayak trip from Mager's down here to Seven Bluff last Sunday and it was spectacular! Be sure to get out and walk around all road crossings & water falls, as they can be a little rough at the higher flow rate!

May River Rise

Before the rise

Wow! What a great week for the Frio River! Starting on Tuesday we experienced some steady rain storms that started bringing the river up. By yesterday, the river had started rising and then we received a bug rain storm north of Leakey that brought alot of water down the

canyon. You can track the progress of the Frio River conditions by following the USGS Frio River guage. The photo gallery  shows the progression of the rise.

Close to the highest point

The Frio River will probably be closed to tubing for most of the day today but it should be really nice starting this weekend. We should have perfect Frio River tubing conditions for a while after this latest rise, stay tuned for updated tubing times and information!

Happy May!

We were treated to a nice rain storm last night and the Frio River levels are up slightly. We measured one inch of rain at Seven Bluff Cabins last night and word on the streets is they got a little over 2 inches in Leakey. As shown by the trusty USGS Frio River gauge, the river is up slightly just a hair over 40 cfs. That translates to decent Frio River tubing with about 1/3 walking between Seven Bluff Crossing and Kenneth Arthur Crossing. The recent reports we’ve gotten is that its still a little bit of a slow float between Kenneth Arthur and Concan, but that the least walking is between 1120 Crossing and Happy Hollow. For the latest tubing report you can always call us here at 830-232-5260 or send an email to info@7bluffcabins.com !

Frio River Easter Update

Frio River in front of CabinsAccording to the trusty USGS Frio River gauge the river has been holding pretty steady with the on and off light rains over the past few months. This picture from the Seven Bluff Cabins Easter Egg Hunt shows the river in the background.

We had GREAT weather for Easter and pretty good Frio River tubing conditions! We have had a ton of kayakers (the Frio River lives up to its name in April), but plenty of tubers as well. They are reporting a few slow/walking sections but overall a good trip between Seven Bluff and Kenneth Arthur crossing. I’ve updated the tube times so be sure to check back as the weather warms up and we get closer to the summer!

Get Your Tubes Ready!

Wow! Its been a great week for the Frio River. The rain last week not only caused a big jump in the Frio River Flow, but the flow has sustained for most of the week! My guess is the flow rate will stabilize in the 80 cfs range, which means GREAT Frio River Tubing! The rains throughout the winter helped immensely, and Easter promises to be great tubing & kayaking conditions! Lets hope it stays warm and beautiful for the upcoming holiday weekend!

Spring Break Update #2

It stopped raining and its gorgeous here in Concan today. According to the trusty USGS Frio River gauge the flow is almost at 50 cfs, which means actually decent tubing for some stretches and pretty good kayaking all around. Check out the graph for the last two years:

Graph of DAILY Discharge, cubic feet per second

The Frio River flow is about the same as it was for Spring Break 2010, which was pretty good tubing. Also, in 2010 we got a big storm in April that carried the river for the whole summer – we’re hoping for another one of those. Frio River Wildlife

Overall, the Frio River is in good condition, the wild flowers have been amazing, and everything is looking really good!

Spring Break Update

Spring Break is upon us and the Frio River is looking good (although still a bit Frio). According to the USGS Frio River Site, the flow has been steadily increasing with the light rains. The weather should be warming up starting Sunday March 21, and I’ll bet we’ll have some Frio River Tubing going on by mid-week. We’ve already spoken to quite a fe people who will be kayaking this week. Everything is very green and the wild flowers are blooming like crazy. Stay tuned for a mid-week update to tube and kayak times once we here from our friends who get out on the river!

More Rain for the River

Wow, its been a great week for the Frio River. As shown on the USGS Frio River gauge, the river flow jumped up nicely with the rain and leveled off at 45 cubic feet per second. The practical meaning of that is: we’re already 50% higher than last year’s flow at this time and inching back up slowly towards “normal”. Normal is good. We LOVE normal.

Even as it currently stands it looks like it will be good kayaking conditions and decent Frio River tubing for Spring Break – assuming its warm enough of course. Everything is getting really green and we have a ton of wildflowers already coming up that should be really nice come March & April!

Frio River Rising

Frio River Feb12The Frio River has been looking great with our steady light rains lately. The picture to the right was taken this afternoon. As always, the river is crystal clear and right now it is living up to its name.

As you can see here the river was actually slightly lower at the same time last year, which is a good sign. Hopefully we continue this upward trend. So far, its looking like we may have some Frio River tubing going on during Spring Break!

Speaking of Spring Break on the Frio, be sure to check out the Randy Rogers music festival as things are filling up quickly. All of our RVs and most of the cabins are booked, but The Don is still available along with a few others, so hurry up & book! We’ll be running free shuttles from SBC to the event all weekend!

Frio River 2/2/12

We had some great weather this past weekend for hanging out along the river and got a few pictures showing the latest conditions both on and off the river. The picture to the right shows the Frio River at Seven Bluff Crossing. I’d say we’re still a little below tube-ability. But as you can see, its on its way up.

Just up from the river, we’ve been working on the cabins hard lately. The next picture was taken from the river’s edge. It would have been way better had I actually been in the river but the Frio River is especially Frio in January, so this is as good as its gonna get till at least March. Note that the cabins aren’t stained or painted yet…

The resident turkeys have been out en masse lately, and the males have been putting on a show. I walked out to find them on our driveway, but they refused to pose for the camera, so this is as good a shot as Bree was able to get. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.

Of course, its always hard to capture the real beauty of this place in the winter in photos. Bree is a great photographer but didn’t have especially good light (or ample time) to get the exact shots she wanted, so we fell back on this old trick: insert cute baby into the shot and you have an instant winner. Rylan says hi!
